YOUR FIRST TATTOO

Your first tattoo: from an idea to a useful conversation

By Bunker Tattoo

You want your first tattoo, but where do you begin? You do not need a finished design. A useful starting point is knowing what appeals to you, what you are unsure about and which questions you want to ask.

Collect a direction, not an endless mood board

Choose a few references that mean something to you. They can be tattoos, but also drawings, photographs or lettering. For each one, explain what you like: quiet line work, colour, mood or the way a design moves around an arm.

A small selection with a few notes says more than dozens of unexplained images. Include anything you know you do not want. This helps the artist understand your taste and makes the conversation much more focused.

Consider placement, size and visibility

Where do you imagine the tattoo? Would you like to see it often yourself, or easily cover it? A rough placement and size are enough to begin. Your artist can then explain how a design works with that area.

Leave room to adjust your initial idea. A design with several elements calls for different choices from a single clear symbol. Mention whether you imagine one separate tattoo or a larger composition that could grow over time.

Choose an artist whose work speaks to you

Look at a portfolio as a whole. Notice the designs, subjects and drawing styles you keep returning to. An artist does not need to have tattooed your exact idea before to be a good fit.

If you are unsure about styles or artists, explain what you are looking for and ask who might suit the project. At Bunker, you can start with your idea; you do not have to make that match on your own.

Ask questions before making a decision

Discuss the process, when you will talk through the design, and the time and cost involved. Share a budget if it is an important starting point for you. That allows the conversation to cover what is possible within it.

The first conversation is a chance to get clarity. Mention doubts and ask again if something is unclear. For practical preparation and aftercare, follow the studio’s instructions for your appointment. A suitable healthcare professional can help with medical questions.
