From childhood drawings to 28 years of tattooing: Roger’s creative outlook

By Bunker Tattoo

Roger was drawing as a little boy. He has now been tattooing for 28 years, co-owns Bunker Tattoo with Mirjam and mentors the apprentices. His curiosity about making things extends from comics and painting to 3D modelling and apps.

A drawing starts with attention to what you want to express

Comics, mythology and art are among Roger’s inspirations. He also makes paintings. His profile brings together these different interests in creating. Meet the person behind the work on Roger’s artist page.

For your own tattoo, this offers a useful starting point: which images stay with you, and why? Naming a subject is one step. Explaining the atmosphere, movement or meaning you are looking for gives the conversation more direction. That can apply to a mythological figure, a personal detail or a completely different idea.

A real example: Chava’s cat with flowers

The photograph above shows the tattoo Roger created for Chava during the Grote Kerk project. A cat and flowers are drawn with lines and soft shading, forming one recognisable image on her arm.

In Chava’s story, cats, nature and a new chapter in Breda come together. Reading her account alongside the photograph adds another layer: recognisable subjects can hold something deeply personal together.

Experience as a foundation for a useful conversation

Twenty-eight years of tattooing and a role mentoring apprentices are part of Roger’s background. That experience is a reason to bring your questions into the conversation. How many elements would you like to include? Which one matters most? How much space will the design have on your body?

Look at several pieces rather than one favourite image. Notice the line work, subject and composition, then explain which choices appeal to you. Our custom tattoo design guide helps turn those preferences into a clear enquiry.

Your references can start something of your own

You can bring a memory, or simply a subject you have loved for years. Choose a few focused references and explain what you enjoy about them. Include a preferred placement and approximate size; it is fine to mention doubts too.

Use an enquiry with Roger as your preferred artist to share your idea and references. Tell your story in your own words. The next step is discussing how it can become a design that suits you.
