The tower that means coming home

When the designs for the project appeared online, one immediately stood out to Marvin: Rutger’s line drawing of the Grote Kerk (RUT-18).

Marvin has lived in Breda for more than twenty years — over half his life. During that time, the Grote Kerk became much more than a landmark. Its tower means coming home: visible from his apartment, when entering the city and while walking through the centre. He first experienced Breda as a student and now shares it with his family. His life changed, while the church remained the same familiar beacon.

The centuries-old walls also hold personal memories. As a student, Marvin worked at events and in catering inside the church. He watched people gather to celebrate meaningful moments, share stories and create memories. To him, the church therefore represents not only the city, but also the life that continues to unfold within it.

The tattoo connects several chapters of his life. Bunker Tattoo created his very first tattoo in 2010, when the studio was still a few doors down in Sint Annastraat. Other tattoos followed, honouring his Indonesian and Limburg roots. Fifteen years later, he returns for a design that captures his love for Breda.

His earlier tattoos tell where he comes from. This one tells where he now calls home: with the people he met in Breda, the memories created there and the stories that are still being written. Receiving it in the most sacred space of the Grote Kerk brings his journey full circle — a story he will carry with him forever.
